About the artist

Terence Leach

I have been painting since childhood. My work moves between observed landscapes and imagined places, asking how a painting can become more than a description of what is in front of us.

Through more than six decades of painting, I have developed a fascination with the expressive possibilities of watercolor. Water, pigment, paper, and timing are active participants. Gradients, granulation, and backruns can carry meaning as well as texture.

I am interested in the space between observation and perception: the moment when looking becomes seeing, and the viewer brings something of their own to a painting.

Based in the Tucson and Green Valley area of Arizona, I paint and teach with an emphasis on exploration, contrast, and the behavior of the medium.
